What is CBG?

There’s a new buzzword that top researchers and consumers are talking about in the hottest cannabis news. While cannabis is a useful and abundant plant, there are many more cannabinoids to look for. The cannabinoid that made headlines is CBG and was first discovered in 1964 by two researchers, Raphael Mechoulam and Yehiel Gaoni. [1]

Overall, Cannabigerol (CBG) has aroused the curiosity of many cannabis enthusiasts. CBG is a substance in which all other cannabinoids are synthesized. Known scientifically as the “stem cell” or “mother” of cannabinoids, CBG offers tremendous therapeutic potential for people with a wide variety of diseases.

CBG is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid and is most commonly found in high-quality CBG strains of industrialized hemp. Cannabigerol is extracted from the hemp plant and contains only trace amounts of THC – the psychoactive compound known to uplift people. [2] Unlike THC, which works directly by activating the CB1 receptors in the brain to stop the transmission of neurotransmitters, CBG acts primarily on receptors in the nervous system.

CB1, CB2, TRPV1, Alpha-2, 5-HT1A, and other cannabinoid receptors are all susceptible to CBG. Diving deeper, cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) is the chemical in cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA). This plays a key role in the biochemistry of the cannabis plant. During the hemp plant’s flowering cycle, CBGA can be converted to THCA and CBDA. These two compounds can be converted into CBD and THC by enzymes. Once this process is complete, there is a small percentage of CBGA left on the hemp plan. CBGA is converted to cannabigerol through a method called decarboxylation.

Although CBD and CBG are different compounds, CBD is synthesized from CBG in cannabis.
